I think the issue lies less with the category itself, and more with the lack of policing of the category. Admins and staff can’t be everywhere, all the time, it’s up to the users to file the reports, and fill out the information, so the staff can FIND the problematic areas. Users don’t file reports, or at least not enough of them. T:

As far as short term solutions to the menace of trolls, it lies on us as streamers to take every precautionary step we can, to mitigate any issues that may arise.

Call your cable/internet provider, get the protection against Dos/doxing they offer.
Call your local law enforcement, be proactive in having a relationship with them, so they can take care of threats more quickly.
And if the problem lies with hurting trolls’ feelings, it’s possible to even shut them out of chat without adding fuel to the fire. Often, they’ll simply go away. Occasionally, they’ll cause some problems for a bit and THEN go away. And rarely, they’ll actually take the extra steps to cause major problems, i.e. ‘Swatting’.

And, we need to, as a community, reinforce the information that’s out there. Dos/doxing is interfering with someone’s job, and how they put food on the plates of themselves and their children.
‘Swatting’ is a FELONY in the United States, and could land them in prison as well as a hefty fine: EVEN if they are under 18 years of age.

The more people are aware, the less likely they are to choose that route.
